Giving Yourself Grace at Season’s End

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

For many of us, the 2025 season has already ended or is quickly ending. As we pack away our uniforms and gear, it’s natural to replay the moments we wish we had back. Maybe it was an inadvertent whistle, a blown call, a missed spot, or a rule we momentarily forgot. Those moments tend to linger in our minds far longer than the countless times we got it right.

Yet it’s worth remembering that for every mistake we made, there were hundreds—if not thousands—of decisions, judgments, signals, and interactions we handled correctly and professionally. Our imperfections stand out precisely because our standard is high.  Scripture reminds us that stumbling is not a sign of failure, but of humanity.  Even those striving to live rightly will fall repeatedly; what matters is the rising. The willingness to reflect, learn, and step back onto the field demonstrates character far more than a perfect record ever could.

Jesus also teaches us how to respond to our shortcomings: with grace. Our weaknesses are not disqualifying—they are places where God’s presence and growth become most visible.  As you look back on this season, acknowledge the mistakes, but do not be defined by them. Extend grace to yourself just as Christ does. Celebrate your growth, your commitment, and your perseverance. And remember, rising after the stumble is part of the calling.

Questions to Ponder:

Are you particularly hard on yourself when you make mistakes?

What can you do to realize God’s grace for your shortcomings?
