“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
In the Old Testament, the Israelites recited the “Shema” in the evening and morning to remind themselves that God is sovereign, and their duty is to love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength as Deuteronomy 6:4-5 proclaims. This twice a day spiritual rhythm helped center their hearts and minds on God’s sovereignty and their covenant relationship with Him.
Similarly, football officials must establish a rhythm of private preparation. This includes physical readiness, rules knowledge, reviewing mechanics, analyzing film, and seeking mentorship. Consistent preparation helps officials align and be good game managers, ensuring they are poised for any situation. Just as the Shema aligns the Israelites with God’s will, private preparation allows officials to perform with integrity and confidence. Whether in officiating or spiritual life, private preparation always precedes public performance, enabling excellence in every action.
Questions to ponder –
Do you have a spiritual rhythm, and does it reflect the attributes of God?
As a football official, how is your private preparation reflected on the field?
