Hitting The Reset Button

“See, the former things have taken place and new things I declare: before they spring into being I announce them to you.”  Isaiah 42:9

How many times in our daily routine do we find ourselves hitting the reset button?  Our cell phone or computer is not working properly, so we have to reset it.  Our TV cable box or modem is not working properly, so we have to reset it.  Sometimes in officiating, we have to hit the reset button as well.

Two officials in the National Football League (NFL) were recently suspended from working several future games for "an instance of unprofessional conduct toward a player."  I imagine most reading this devotional know by now what happened.  And while we can’t and shouldn’t condone such behavior by officials, we certainly can relate.  Officials are and should be held to higher standards, but we’re human and sometimes make the same mistakes as coaches, administrators, and players.  Many times, officials let unsporting behavior go, understanding that emotion is part of football and not wanting to influence the outcome of a game, especially if it’s close.  Football at times gets heated, and emotions run high, and it’s during those times that we need to lean on Christ and seek his guidance through those times.  And when we do and take the high road, our light for Christ shines brightly.

I pray these two officials are getting the encouragement and support they need from their fellow zebras to help them hit the reset button and, more importantly, to remind them that Christ is Lord and Savior, and through him we conquer all.

Questions to Ponder:

What can you do to support and encourage a fellow official who may be going through a difficult stretch?
