“In every way I’ve shown you that it is necessary to help the weak by laboring like this and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, because he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Help means to assist; to make it easier for someone to do something; to improve; to make a situation better. We were all born needing help, and we will continue needing help our entire lives. It is a blessing to receive help. It is even more of a blessing to give help.
Any successful and lasting officiating career will require lots of help from supervisors, clinicians, trainers, veteran officials, mentors, and even peers. Help will come from the outside as well: administrators, coaches, game operations, security, attendants, food staff, law enforcement, hotel staff, and more. We literally couldn’t do our jobs without help. We can (and should) do our jobs while giving help to others.
Seek the Lord for ways to give. Sometimes this could be monetary, but many times you can give your time: review a film, discuss rules, and talk through situations. Give your expertise: share best practices, give sound advice, share recommendations. Give your support, be an advocate, celebrate others, and lift up in the tough times. Give others love, respect, compassion, and grace. It’s a major blessing to receive these things, and we need to, but it’s truly life-changing when we give.
Questions to Ponder:
1. What can I give more of to God?
2. What can I give more of to people?
3. How can I better recognize and cherish the blessing in giving?
