On Purpose, With Purpose

Related Scripture:

"And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.”

Colossians 3:17, 23-24

Purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Most, if not all things we do in our officiating career is ‘on’ purpose. Even things we don’t ‘want’ to do or don’t enjoy doing, we do it ‘on’ purpose - willingly, unforced, uncoerced. We study rules, workout, watch film, go to camps & practices, go to meetings, etc. This is all done for a reason, or purpose.

I challenge us to do officiating, and life, ‘with’ purpose. That purpose should be greater than working a bigger game, getting a playoff assignment, or being promoted to the next level. Those things could be a byproduct, but the purpose is to glorify God and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our lives. These verses remind us to do all we do on purpose (willingly) and with purpose (Christ-centered). Our purpose is not to please man but to please God.

Questions to Ponder:

What is my purpose for officiating?

How can I assure my purpose aligns with God’s purpose?
