The Power of Forgiveness!

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Ephesians 4:32

Navigating relationships in officiating can be as challenging as making the tough calls.  In the upward trajectory of my officiating journey, I encountered a difficult situation with a fellow referee that tested my patience. During a game, a disagreement escalated, and I felt betrayed when my partner seemed to prioritize their own image over our shared responsibility. The aftermath has left a lingering tension between us, disrupting our teamwork and camaraderie.

As Christians, we are called to a higher standard when it comes to handling conflicts. The scripture urges us to practice kindness and compassion, even when it’s hard. It’s easy to harbor resentment and allow pride to fester, but this only hinders our growth and effectiveness as officials. Holding onto bitterness can cloud our judgment and affect our interactions with players and coaches.

Instead of allowing this rift to define our partnership, I am reminded of the importance of forgiveness. It doesn't excuse the behavior, but it frees us both to move forward. Engaging in an open conversation about the incident can help clear the air while acknowledging our shared mission: ensuring the integrity of the game. By striving for reconciliation, we can rebuild trust and strengthen our bond as officiating partners.

Questions to Ponder:

1.  How can you approach a difficult conversation with a colleague to foster understanding?

2.  What steps can you take to practice forgiveness in your professional relationships?
