“I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (NKJ version) .” Galatians 5: 15-16

Nick Sabin will arguably go down in history as the greatest college football coach. After every game, win or loss, when asked where the team goes from here, he always said he needed to get the players refocused on the process. Coach Sabin knew that placing too much emphasis on one game’s results would cause extreme highs and extreme lows for their teams. This kind of thinking would hinder the team in accomplishing their ultimate goal.
Paul is explaining to the Galatians that for the believer there’s two ways to think or live. One is in the flesh, the other is in the Spirit. If you read the rest of the chapter, Paul explains that a true follower of Christ (one that has given his life to Christ) desires to live in the Spirit but must fight against himself (flesh) to do so. To live in the Spirit is to go against our very nature. Paul shows the goal of living in the Spirit and warns us of the pitfalls that we have to overcome.
God understands our weaknesses and still loves us. Don’t be discouraged, focus on the process. Like officiating – we study the rules, mechanics book, go to camps — in hopes we can someday accomplish perfection. But we get better because of the process.
Questions to Ponder – Is it a daily priority to talk to God (pray)?
How often do you read your Bible?
Do you have a group of believers that lean on and be accountable too?
