Avoid the Distractions

Related Scripture:

“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:22

Today’s related scripture is a call to where we place our trust and focus. For Christian football officials, it speaks directly to how we carry authority, handle pressure, and maintain integrity on the field.

Officiating is filled with competing voices. Coaches argue, players react emotionally, fans judge instantly, and our own minds replay every call. The temptation is to look to those voices for affirmation or fear their disapproval. Isaiah reminds us that our confidence and security must come from God alone. When we “look to Him,” we officiate from a place of steadiness and confidence in Him rather than anxiety.

This truth is reinforced in the New Testament by Hebrews 12:2: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” Fixing our eyes implies intentional focus. Just as officials must lock in on keys and mechanics, we are called to fix our spiritual focus on Christ. When we do, distractions vanish and lose their power. Pressure does not disappear, but it no longer controls us.

As officials, we exercise delegated authority. We enforce rules we did not create, for the good of the game. Similarly, our lives are lived under God’s ultimate authority. Jesus modeled perfect obedience, even under unjust criticism. When we look to Him, we learn how to stand firm, apply standards consistently, and respond with humility rather than defensiveness.

Finally, both Isaiah and Hebrews point us toward endurance. Late in the fourth quarter, fatigue sets in and clarity is tested. The same is true in life. Looking to God reminds us that our identity is not defined by a missed call or a great game, but by Christ. When our eyes are fixed on Him, we officiate not just with accuracy, but with peace, purpose, and witness.

Questions to Ponder:

1. What areas in your life are not fully trusting God?

2. Are your eyes focused on the Author and Finisher of our faith?
