Hebrews 4:12

"For the word of God is alive and active... it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

As football officials, we train and review film throughout the season to recognize fouls and then hopefully administer penalty enforcement by rule. Similarly, in our spiritual walk, it's essential to examine our hearts regularly, because we often miss the fouls in our own lives. The Bible reminds us that “the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9-10), showing how easily we can be blind to our own sin. Sin offends a Holy God and breaks fellowship with God and others.  Just as reviewing film helps officials improve, God’s Word “judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” We can “cut out” the fouls in our lives and align ourselves with God’s truth, purifying our hearts and motives. When we examine ourselves with God’s Word, we allow His truth to judge our actions and help us live as image bearers (Gen 1:27).

Questions to Ponder

“Victorious Christian Living is a Series of New Beginning” - When we “miss the mark” of God’s standards apply 1 John 1:9 to live in VICTORY!

Next time we throw that yellow flag, may it remind us our faults and examine our lives daily with God’s truth.
