Set The Tone

A very common question I get asked is “who’s the most difficult coach you’ve worked with?” I always pause, smile, and give an unexpected answer - “Truly, none of them.” Certainly, there have been disagreements and intense moments, but I haven’t really had much difficulty working with coaches as I’ve progressed through my career. The practical reasons are I’ve matured, I’m more accurate and consistent, I’m a better communicator, and the coaches themselves are at the highest level of ability, knowledge, and professionalism (most of the time).
The ‘real’ reason is God’s favor, mercy, presence, and His Word. Many scriptures show us how to set the tone and what the result will be. I don’t set the tone with aggressiveness, threats, or an attitude. I set the tone the way God’s Word says to. I genuinely love all of the coaches, participants, fans, and spectators, no matter what they do or say. I pray for them and treat them with respect. It has proven true and will for anyone in any setting. Prayerfully meditate on these scriptures and ask for God’s wisdom and guidance on how to apply them in your games (and at home, work and other settings).
James 3:18 (cultivate peace)
Galatians 6:7 (reaping & sowing)
Proverbs 15:1 (gentle answer)
Mark 12:31 (love your neighbor)
Matthew 5:43-48 (love those that persecute you)
Questions to Ponder:
Have I repented for setting the wrong tone in the past?
How can I be accountable for setting the right tone going forward?
